Soon after Dez and Ava arrived home that evening, Cam popped the cork on the champagne. He poured the bubbly into two crystal flutes and passed one to Dez.

“Nice.” She accepted the glass. He noticed she was in a buoyant mood, eyes bright with good cheer, which he attributed to the end of the workweek. “What’s the occasion, babe?”

“My book is . . . done.”

“Congratulations!” She leaned forward, kissed him. “I’m so proud of you! Despite it all, huh?”

“Yup, despite every roadblock, I got it done. I’m toasting to that.”

They clinked glasses, and Cam took a big slurp, but Dez didn’t sip from hers.

“Not in the mood for champagne?” he asked. “I know it can be dry, but I thought you’d like this one. The guy at the liquor store recommended it.”

“I have some good news, too.”

“What is it? Did you get a raise?”

“Be right back.” She placed the glass on the counter and went upstairs. Ava pointed at the champagne flute.

“Apple juice for you, Pumpkin,” Cam said. He got a juice box out of the fridge and popped the straw in it. He clinked his flute against her juice, and she giggled and sipped daintily.

Dez returned carrying a small plastic baggie.

“I took it this morning, then again at lunch,” she said.

She opened the baggie and showed him the test strip.

“Oh my God,” he said. “You’re pregnant?”

Nodding and grinning, she came into his arms. Ava saw them embracing and wanted in on it, too, her little arms wrapped around their legs. Cam lifted his daughter and kissed her, and then he kissed Dez.

No matter what we’ve been through, moments like this make it all worthwhile, Cam thought, hugging his family close. A new book done, a new baby on the way . . . it’s a new day for the Woodson family. The tide has finally turned for me, for all of us.
